The exhibition is another in the “Lost/Recovered” series presenting selected objects considered as a part of the most valuable war losses recovered in recent years thanks to efforts of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage of the Republic of Poland. This time we present objects from the pre-war Wroclaw collections.War losses are movable cultural property from public, church and private collections lost as a result of World War II from Polish territories within its borders after 1945. Of all the European countries, it was Poland that lost most of its tangible heritage as a result of the war. Shortly after the war number of Polish war losses was estimated at over half a million movable monuments worth tens of billions of dollars at that time. The database of war losses, which is maintained by the Department for Restitution of Cultural Goods of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage of the Republic of Poland, currently contains over 65 thousand records and is constantly updated and supplemented, among others thanks to provenance research conducted by museums. The restitution activities of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage of the Republic of Poland have led to the recovery of over 600 individual objects in recent years. There are 125 restitution cases pending in 14 countries around the world. The National Museum in Wroclaw, from which most of the objects presented at the exhibition came from, is currently the second largest beneficiary of the restitution activities undertaken by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage of the Republic of Poland, taking into account the number of recovered objects. The memory of works lost as a result of World War II, the dissemination of their images and knowledge about them, and the story of successful restitution cases contribute to the discovery of more objects of cultural heritage.Ewa WitkowskaOpening 06.07.2022, 18:00The exhibition is open 07.07.–31.07.2022Organisers Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, National Centre for Culture, National Museum in WroclawCurator Ewa WitkowskaCoordinators Dorota Wada, Agnieszka Bebłowska Bednarkiewcz
